Henrico's Food Bank

Our History

The idea for the Henrico Community Food Bank started when founder Sudeshna realized that there wasn’t an entity dedicated solely to delivering food assistance to the 30,000 residents of Henrico County who are food insecure. From there, an idea blossomed into a powerful and dynamic nonprofit operation focused on providing food assistance to those in Henrico County who need it most.

With the goal to "localize" food access, the Board embarked on evaluation of their food distribution strategy focusing on equitable distribution and concept client first.

With this concept in mind, HCFB pivoted to a Mobile Food Distribution model vs the traditional pantry model, meeting clients on home turf thus breaking the barriers to food access. This new strategy also allowed the organization to pull together resource partners providing valuable services.

As we have seen with our distributions, the mobile model has been an impactful solution eliminating the transportation challenges and the need to take a day off to access a Pantry. Our staff and volunteers are on the road daily traveling the length and breadth of Henrico County serving our resident with fresh produce, daily, protein, and pantry staples.

What started as a kitchen table idea has flourished into a powerful force to fight hunger in our community. Now, backed by the support of a powerful grassroots community of volunteers, individuals, community groups, faith-based organizations, and corporate and community partners, Henrico Community Food Bank uses its mobile pantry model paired with a food assistance hotline to provide direct service and delivery to those experiencing food insecurity.

Mission & Vision

Provide access to nutritious food in an equitable and dignified manner to those in need.

HCFB envisions a County where healthy, nutritious food is available to all. Creating value and opportunities for clients thus empowering them to shape a secure and enriched future.
